New ‘Right to Try’ regulations officially came into effect at the end of April. The changes ensure that people receiving benefits, such as Universal Credit, can now start volunteering without it automatically triggering a reassessment of their award.
The fear of sanctions or losing vital support may have been a barrier for people receiving benefits who wanted to get into volunteering. Charity leaders from NCVO have welcomed the legislation.

A new poll from Oxfam and Censuswide has revealed that 68% of Brits feel society is becoming more disconnected. But 69% believe that volunteering is the key to bringing our communities back together.
Interestingly, the survey also found that 62% of people believe school leavers should consider volunteering in their first three years instead of diving straight into work or further education.
With 74% agreeing that volunteering experience makes young people more attractive to employers, it’s a good reminder of how giving time builds cross-generational connections, boosts wellbeing, and develops crucial workplace skills.

Over one million people applied to volunteer at the competition, taking place between 11th June – 19th July, with around 65,000 becoming successful. Huge volunteer numbers for a huge event.
