Promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in volunteering

New research commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) explores how smaller volunteer-involving organisations, particularly those led by minority communities, can improve equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

It found that success depends on an organisation’s culture, resources, and commitment. Volunteers are more engaged when they connect with the cause and see diverse leadership. Inclusive recruitment, accessible onboarding, and strong management help improve retention, but post-pandemic challenges have made volunteer recruitment harder, especially for underrepresented groups.

Organisations need more funding, clear guidance, training, and opportunities to share best practices to support EDI efforts. Government leadership can play a key role in setting direction and securing resources.
