New DCMS Report: Digital tools that support volunteering

A new piece of research from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) looks at a variety of digital tools – including volunteer management solutions like TeamKinetic – and how they support volunteering.

Key Takeaways for TeamKinetic:

Supporting Recruitment Through Integrations
We are one of the only platforms found to support the integration of third-party platforms. One example of this includes our work with DoiT for the Big Help Out and beyond.

Volunteer Feedback, Incentives and Rewards
We were seen as an innovator in this area – our partnership with Tempo Time Credits, links to post-opportunity surveys, and custom reward badges are seen as breakthrough features.

Unlocking the Potential of Other New Technologies
The report highlights our work with Braw Data to look at predictive analytics on volunteer behaviour, such as dropouts.

Interoperability
We’re currently working with the Open Data Institute (alongside other partners) to develop an open data standard for volunteering. By fostering an open ecosystem, we aim to drive innovation, boost adoption in the VCSE sector, and make it easier for volunteers and organisations to connect.

Expanding Further
We’re also expanding integration with popular platforms like Alexa, Google, and WhatsApp. This meets volunteers where they are, rather than creating new apps.

Digital in Volunteering Toolkit

As you may know, late last year we launched the Digital in Volunteering Toolkit. We’ve been developing this toolkit and surrounding resources for a while now alongside Gethyn Williams and our partners at the Association of Volunteer Managers.

We’ll also be looking to kick-start the Community of Practice very soon. This will be a space for volunteer managers and leaders to:

  • Access – hear about future Toolkit updates and related training opportunities.
  • Learn – share digital knowledge and experiences with their peers
  • Influence – bring our collective voice together to advocate for our needs in digital technology

The Community of Practice is all about empowering you to embrace digital transformation confidently. It’s a vendor-neutral space that we hope will play a key role in some significant digital agendas coming to volunteering next year. We’d love for you to join us. You can sign up for the community of practice and get your hands on part one of the toolkit here:

Why do we need a toolkit?

The volunteer landscape is evolving faster than ever. The COVID era has reshaped who volunteers and what they expect, while social changes challenge traditional recruitment and retention approaches. With digital technology also advancing rapidly, this toolkit offers Volunteer Managers timely support to re-evaluate the role of digital within their organisations, allowing them to adapt and thrive amidst these shifts.

What’s in the toolkit for me?

The toolkit is perfect for any volunteer managers and leaders. But anyone involved in the volunteering world will find it useful! It tackles big questions for the future, such as:

  • How can we prepare for the impact of AI?
  • In what ways can digital help us be more inclusive?
  • What exactly is open data, and how can it add value?

Through a range of practical advice and shared learnings, the toolkit empowers Volunteer Managers to adopt the right digital solutions on their own terms, addressing real-world challenges in volunteer management.
