Small charities under financial strain

Small charities have been under significant financial strain over the past few years, with public donations dropping sharply from 54% to 25% between 2020/21 and 2021/22. This left 73% of small organisations without a primary income source, increasing reliance on limited grants and local support.

This reduced source of income caused many charities to start relying on limited grants, local support, and government funding. However, Government funding to the voluntary sector also fell to 26% of total income in 2021/22 (down from 30%), with only 4% reaching small charities.
