Well well well…

Watching the final at Wembley was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. At the final whistle, cheers erupted throughout the stadium, tears were shed (not just by me!), and a party was had by the 87,000+ in attendance – a new record for any UEFA European Championship game.

I’m still in disbelief!

The last time England won anything in football was the Men’s World Cup in 1966. At that time, women’s football had been banned by the FA, who deemed the sport unsuitable for women. The ban was finally lifted in 1971. Many women’s teams weren’t even completely professional until a few years ago. The majority of players had to have jobs on the side just to survive and carry on playing the game they love.

It’s a testament to the perseverance of women in football that we have gotten to this position today – but it’s not over yet.

It’s been a pleasure following England around the country for the past month, as well as seeing some of the best in Europe battle it out in our local stadiums.

Investment in grassroots football for the next generation of Lionesses is desperately needed, we can only hope this tournament has proven how deserved it is.
