{"id":662,"date":"2015-04-20T10:39:57","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T09:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teamkineticuk.wordpress.com\/?p=662"},"modified":"2022-06-13T10:33:02","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T09:33:02","slug":"council-sports-budgets-cut-by-42m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teamkinetic.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/04\/council-sports-budgets-cut-by-42m\/","title":{"rendered":"Council sports budgets cut by \u00a342m"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"BBC News\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-31624412\">http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-31624412<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-663\" src=\"http:\/\/teamkinetic.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/regeneration-sport-22-a.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Regeneration Sport 22 A\" width=\"231\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teamkinetic.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/regeneration-sport-22-a.jpg 2466w, https:\/\/teamkinetic.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/regeneration-sport-22-a-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/teamkinetic.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/regeneration-sport-22-a-768x516.jpg 768w, https:\/\/teamkinetic.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/regeneration-sport-22-a-1024x688.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/>More than \u00a342m has been axed from councils&#8217; sports and leisure budgets since 2010, a BBC survey has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Among the regions which saw the biggest losses were London and north-west England, which saw cuts of more than \u00a312.3m.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"quote\">\n<div class=\"quote-inner\">\n<blockquote class=\"quote\"><p>Once a facility is lost, it&#8217;s gone forever<\/p>\n<footer>David Moorcroft, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and ex-UK Athletics chief executive<\/footer>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Sports stars and charities said they were concerned cutting facilities was &#8220;short-termism&#8221; that could impact on communities&#8217; health and fitness levels.<\/p>\n<p>The government said it was investing in grassroots sport.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the biggest cuts occurred in the North West, where Liverpool City Council closed Woolton Swimming Pool, saving more than \u00a33m.<\/p>\n<p>In the West Midlands, which saw \u00a39.6m of cuts, the region&#8217;s only 50m pool &#8211; in Coventry &#8211; was among the facilities to face the axe.<\/p>\n<p>And in London, where budgets were cut by \u00a38.8m, Mornington Crescent Sports Centre in Camden was among the facilities to close.<\/p>\n<p>In other regions, Sheffield lost the Don Valley Stadium, where Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill had trained, while Newcastle-upon-Tyne saw the closure of its City Pool in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>David Moorcroft, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former chief executive of UK Athletics, said: &#8220;In times of cutbacks to public services, rightly or wrongly, sport and leisure is one of the first things to get cut.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really unfortunate because the health and happiness of the nation and communities is based around being able to access facilities that encourage people to take physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ultimately, if we are trying to reduce obesity among young people, you can&#8217;t really have clubs and volunteers doing all that work. Once a facility is lost, it&#8217;s gone forever.
